BERNARD RANCILLAC

1931 - 2021

Is a French artist whose work is characteristic of Narrative Figuration. He is even one of the pioneers of this current close to American Pop Art, which is also more corrosive. Bernard Rancillac introduces singular references into his canvases, such as comic book characters or images borrowed from advertising, in order to mark his opposition to consumer society. All his life, he remained a committed artist: his canvases are real political manifestos, in which he denounces in particular the American intervention in Vietnam, the apartheid in South Africa, the persistence of the colonial mentality in France... A true political painter, who exhibited at MoMA in 1999, in particular, at the Centre Pompidou in 2001, and at the Maison des Arts in Malakoff in 2003.
