JEAN MESSAGIER

1920 - 1999

Is a French painter, engraver and sculptor. A prolific artist, he distinguished himself as an abstract painter associated with the Second School of Paris and Lyrical Abstraction. Refusing to lock himself into a fixed categorization between Abstraction and Figuration, he cultivates a singular artistic language, drawing on the profound forces of nature and in his intimate relationship with it. As early as the 1950s, Messagier was noticed for his dreamlike compositions, marked by interlacing and swirls that evoke constant movement, propelling his work beyond French borders. A nature lover, fisherman, hunter, party organizer, party organizer, lover of good food and sports enthusiast, the painter Jean Messagier will establish himself as one of the outstanding figures of painting in the second half of the 20th century.
