OLIVIER DEBRÉ

1920 - 1999

Painter of the exaltation of color and wide spaces, Olivier Debré is a key artist of post-war Lyrical Abstraction. The embodiment of French Colorfield Painting, this “European Rothko”, therefore qualifies his painting as “Fervent Abstraction” because it evokes emotion. Olivier Debré sometimes painted very large canvases by sliding a kind of brush and broom across the canvas on the ground, always painting outside, whatever the weather. He is at the origin of several stage curtains, for the Comédie-Française, for the Hong Kong Opera or Shanghai in China.
