JEAN MIOTTE

HIS WORKS

Jean Miotte (1926-2016) is a French painter.
He studied prestigious mathematics and then turned to painting in 1945.
It is recognized for being at the border between Informal Art, Tachism and Lyrical Abstraction. Inspired by Rouault and Matisse, he places great importance on the choice of colors that are traced and scanned on the canvas in order to bring out “that sacred something in the energy of life”.
It goes through a more figurative period before evolving towards more gestural painting. He spent a few months in the United States and established relationships with renowned artists such as Rothko and Calder who inspired him.
In general, the artist seeks to create a universal language that involves Abstraction and the notion of movement and gestures.
Miotte's works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in the City of Paris, the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In 2002, a Jean Miotte Museum opened in New York, within the Chelsea Museum, with a permanent collection of his works.
